01 Design: Subtle Changes with Added Accessory Fun
Before the launch of this year's flagship smartphones, I wondered how much further phones could possibly push the envelope—especially given rising component costs like storage. However, it seems I underestimated the relentless drive of smartphone manufacturers.
Following MediaTek's release of the Dimensity 9600 Pro, vivo secured the global launch and introduced its annual flagship lineup, the vivo X500 Pro series. Alongside camera upgrades, it comes pre-installed with the brand-new OriginOS 7. What kind of unique experience does this year's flagship offer, and is it worth buying? Let’s dive into it through our recent hands-on experience with the vivo X500 Pro Max.
Starting with the design, the vivo X500 Pro Max features relatively minor visual changes compared to previous flagships. The rear camera module retains a massive circular design; while it might feel slightly less novel, it represents a continuation of their signature aesthetic. The core reason for this layout remains functional: housing the high-spec triple-camera system requires substantial internal space.
The "Lanxia" colorway looks lighter than traditional orange, with micro-sparkle textures embedded in the upper portion. Built with a glass back, it offers a silky touch. Notably, the rear cover is not completely flat—the upper camera module protrudes slightly, but it transitions smoothly into the lower body. This design keeps the lower half slim and comfortable to grip while softening the visual height of the camera bump.
Although named Pro Max, the phone doesn't sport an oversized screen; instead, it matches the size of previous Ultra models. It features a 6.85-inch front display utilizing BOE's latest Q11 2K panel. This screen offers lower power consumption, reduced ghosting, and supports an LTPO 8T 1-144Hz adaptive refresh rate, alongside improvements in color and brightness uniformity.
Continuing its success with telephoto extenders, vivo has brought this feature to the vivo X500 Pro Max. It supports both the 4.7X (400mm equivalent) ZEISS Extender G2 Ultra and the 2.35x (200mm equivalent) ZEISS Extender G2.
Additionally, the vivo X500 Pro Max introduces a fun new "Snap Screen" accessory. Functioning as an external secondary screen connected via Bluetooth, it uses a magnetic design that attaches directly to compatible magnetic cases—making rear-camera selfies or group shots much easier.
02 Imaging: Comprehensive Hardware Upgrades with a Push into Video
How has the imaging system been upgraded on the vivo X500 Pro Max?
Looking at the rear camera setup, the main camera has been upgraded to Sony’s newly released 50-megapixel LYT910 sensor (BlueImage Light-Imperial 900) featuring a 1/1.28-inch large sensor, f/1.57 aperture, an ultra-high 17EV dynamic range, and a 3-degree wide-angle gimbal stabilization system delivering industry-leading CIPA 7.0 professional-grade stabilization.
The telephoto lens adopts the same hardware as the vivo X300 Ultra: a 200-megapixel Samsung HP0 image sensor with a 1/1.4-inch large sensor, f/2.67 aperture, 85mm equivalent focal length (3.5x optical zoom), and CIPA 7.0 professional stabilization. The ultra-wide camera uses a 50-megapixel Samsung JN5 sensor with a 1/2.75-inch base, while the front camera utilizes a 50-megapixel Samsung JN1 sensor.
The core difference between the Pro Max and the standard Pro model lies in the Pro Max’s upgraded telephoto setup, while the other two lenses remain identical.
Compared to the previous generation, the vivo X500 Pro Max delivers a comprehensive hardware upgrade. On paper alone, it firmly places itself at the top tier of mobile photography. But beyond specifications, it introduces several new user-focused experiences.
A prominent addition is the AI Camera option placed right next to the shutter button. When enabled, the phone automatically matches the shooting scene with optimal color styles and provides composition guidance for portraits. This feature is genuinely helpful for everyday users—you don’t need deep knowledge of composition or color grading because the phone guides you step-by-step to capture great shots.
The ultra-long-range snapshot capability has also been enhanced. Aside from the Ultra-grade 200MP telephoto lens, the Pro Max pushes sports capture up to 30x zoom. In practice, even when shooting at 30x magnification, the viewfinder remains remarkably steady. After taking a snapshot, you can watch the image progressively process from slightly soft to crystal clear.
While smartphone camera improvements grew exponentially in past years, growth has plateaued into a logarithmic phase recently—making generational gaps harder for ordinary users to notice. Recognizing this, vivo began pivoting heavily toward video last year, a trend that is even more pronounced in the vivo X500 Pro Max. The main camera supports 4K 240fps slow-motion capture and 17EV ultra-dynamic Log recording for expansive color grading flexibility.
Thanks to the BlueImage Light-Imperial 900 sensor, casual night videos show noticeable improvements. Highlights and shadows retain more detail in dark environments, and night lighting and color tones appear richer and more vibrant.
Note: The vivo X500 Pro Max incorporates ams OSRAM’s imaging and display synergy solutions:
- The TMF8829 multi-zone dToF sensor supports laser autofocus and target tracking.
- The high-precision multi-spectral sensor VUS—co-created based on ams OSRAM’s OLED under-display spectral color sensing technology—optimizes display clarity and eye comfort.
- The TCS3555 multi-channel spectral sensor enhances white balance, exposure control, and anti-flicker performance.
- Together, these three components work in tandem to perceive light, color, and space.
Furthermore, vivo has integrated user-friendly video features accessible to everyday creators. The Movie Mode adds "Daylight Film" and "Cool Silver Salt" cinematic color profiles, perfect for capturing atmospheric videos at sunset, dusk, or by the beach. Users can also select "Paris Afterglow" in regular recording mode for romantic, realistic footage—simply choose your preferred style and shoot.
The device also introduces Cinematic Director Movements, including Center Lock, Rotating Shot, Super Slow-Mo, and Dual-View perspectives. "Center Lock" lets you double-tap a subject while recording to keep them sharply focused even if they briefly step out of the frame and return. The "Rotating Shot" is particularly fun: while holding the phone normally, the video automatically rotates to create an Inception-style effect. Note that the footage is cropped to achieve this, but having a phone generate such dynamic effects natively greatly increases creative potential.
Additionally, the vivo X500 Pro Max introduces Live Photo capture during video recording, letting you shoot videos and Live Photos simultaneously. Live Photo quality has also been upgraded, offering 2K, 4K, and 8K resolution options.
A neat touch in the gallery app is the new "Swipe-to-Clear" function. When browsing photos, you can delete unwanted pictures simply by swiping up—a much more natural gesture than old multi-step deletion methods.
03 OriginOS 7: Fluid Design and Supercharged AI
Debuting out-of-the-box on the vivo X500 Pro Max, the OriginOS 7 operating system brings numerous changes and refinements.
One of the most noticeable shifts is that OriginOS 7 embraces "Transparency"—widgets, search bars, folders, and the drop-down notification panel all feature immersive translucent effects. Meticulous attention has been paid to light refraction simulating glass textures, accompanied by fluid motion effects during certain interactions. It also offers three distinct levels of blur: Real, Natural, and Soft.
Beyond transparency, OriginOS 7 introduces highly creative lock screen themes. The "Liquid Theme" features jelly-like bounce effects where touching the screen causes realistic compression and deformation. There’s also a Water Ripple theme mimicking fluid light reflections on a pool surface.
Another nostalgic feature is the "Flash Card" theme, which gives any photo placed on your lock screen a dynamic glowing effect as you tilt your phone. Additionally, an AI Pet theme allows users to upload photos of their own pets to generate interactive lock screen companions that react differently based on their state (though this generation feature requires a fee).
However, a completely free feature that pet lovers will adore is the ability to directly drag and turn pet photos from the gallery into desktop stickers. You can resize them or turn any object or person into a sticker to freely customize your home screen.
vivo has also brought its acclaimed Atomic Workbench (previously praised on foldable devices) to candy-bar phones. It allows you to display up to five apps simultaneously on the foreground for seamless multitasking, enabling easy drag-and-drop sharing of images, text, and documents across applications.
System AI capabilities have also advanced. While complex cross-app voice commands still have limitations, it is noticeably smarter than the previous generation. The BlueLM (BlueXingyun) Assistant now features a "Pro Mode" capable of automatically planning and executing complex tasks.
BlueLM has also deepened "Assistant Memory". For instance, if you are planning a trip to Xinjiang for National Day and save a bunch of guides, food spots, and ideas from Xiaohongshu beforehand, you can ask Assistant Memory to retain them. When you prompt BlueLM to build a Xinjiang travel itinerary, it synthesizes your saved interests instead of generating a generic web template.
You can even prompt the phone to create simple mini-games on the fly—such as generating a playable Tetris game—which can then be saved directly to your home screen. Users can also generate custom widgets like word counters or niche conversion calculators via AI prompts.
Furthermore, OriginOS 7 handles battery management with greater granularity. Charging and discharging status now includes estimated time remaining prompts. When plugging in, it displays the expected time until a full charge so you know how long to wait before heading out. When the battery drops to around 20%, it analyzes active applications to estimate exactly how much screen-on time is left, eliminating battery anxiety.
04 Conclusion: Continuing the Race, but Focusing on Perceptible Value
Returning to our opening question: How can smartphones keep evolving this year? The vivo X500 Pro Max answers by continuing to push forward, but shifting its focus away from spec sheets and onto experiences that ordinary users can actually perceive and utilize daily. While its physical design changes are modest and lack radical freshness, accessories like the zoom extenders and snap screen inject fresh creative fun.
Imaging remains the core of vivo's X series. By integrating Sony's new LYT910 large sensor, the Ultra-class 200MP Samsung HP0 telephoto lens with CIPA 7.0 stabilization, and the Samsung JN5 ultra-wide lens, the Pro Max sits comfortably at the top tier of mobile photography hardware.
More importantly, it translates professional capabilities into accessible features: AI-powered automated color and composition matching, ultra-steady 30x telephoto snapshots, 4K 240fps slow motion, 17EV Log, cinematic color styles, center lock tracking, rotating camera movements, and in-video Live Photo capture show that vivo’s focus has expanded from "taking better pictures" to making video creation effortless and fun.
The new OriginOS 7 delivers experiential upgrades through translucent UI design, fluid animations, creative lock screens, custom stickers, atomic workflows on candy-bar phones, BlueLM Pro, memory features, and AI-generated mini-games/widgets. Combined with thoughtful touches like swipe-to-delete photos and precise battery estimations, these upgrades provide tangible, everyday improvements.
